Watch: landslide in Shimla District blocks major highway

Shimla landslide: Himachal has recorded heavy rain and this has also resulted in landslides.

A landslide in the Shimla district of Himachal Pradesh has resulted in a block on National Highway 5 that connects Firozpur in Punjab with Shipki La on the India-China border.

The state emergency call center said no loss of life or property was reported in the landslide in Jeori, near Rampur.

A video shared on social media by Himachal Traffic, Tourist and Railway Police shows a landmass sliding down a slope. Boulders tumble down the slope amid a cloud of dust. Some vehicles apparently had a tight escape route as they can be seen right at the edge of the point where the landslide occurred.

“DPCR has announced that a landslide has occurred near the Jeori subdistrict of Rampur District Shimla, and the NH-05 road has been closed, according to a bulletin,” according to ANI news agency.

The district administration has instructed subdivision judge Rampur and a police team to assess the situation.

Himachal Pradesh recorded heavy rains during this monsoon that have also resulted in landslides.

Previously, on August 28, the Chandigarh-Manali National Highway – National Highway 3 – was closed due to a landslide between Aut and Pandoh in Mandi District.

Last month, 13 people died after a landslide in the Kinnaur district buried several vehicles in rubble.

A government bus, truck and some cars were trapped after the landslide blocked the Reckong Peo-Shimla highway.
