Here’s how Xiaomi plans to protect users from malware

Written by News Sateek

NEW DELHI: Xiaomi is reportedly working on a new feature that will protect its users from accidental APK installations and malware. Side loading of apps has been one of the most desirable and differentiating features of the Android operating system. The feature allows users to install apps from the company’s official app store. However, downloading and installing a sideloading app puts users at risk of installing malware on their Android phone. In order to avoid this situation, Xiaomi would be working on a new feature for MIUI called “pure mode”.
According to a report from ITHome, Xiaomi is currently recruiting internal beta testers for MIUI Pure Mode. According to the report, this upcoming feature will allow users to block Android apps from downloading to their Xiaomi phones. Once the feature is enabled, users will not be able to install APKs from unofficial sources and app repositories. Users will also be allowed to turn off pure mode at any time.
In an introduction to the Pure Mode beta, Xiaomi states that 40% of APKs downloaded to Xiaomi phones do not pass the security audit and 10% are recognized as risky apps. The main objective of this new mode is to prevent risks caused by accidental APK downloads, background installs and bad operations. The feature will also give users more control over which apps they want to install on their smartphones.
The company has yet to reveal when this new feature will be made available to users. The report suggests the feature is currently in beta and is limited to China.
Recently, Xiaomi launched its latest Redmi branded smartphone and true wireless earphones in India. The Redmi 10 Prime comes in two variants – 4GB + 64GB and 6GB + 128GB priced at Rs 12,499 and Rs 14,499. It is the first smartphone to be powered by the MediaTek Helio G88 processor. The smartphone runs the Android 11 operating system and comes with a 50MP quad-rear camera setup.
On the other hand, Redmi Earbuds 3 Pro is available in blue, white and pink color options and is priced at Rs 2,999. The earbuds come with smart wear detection for auto play and pause. The headphones feature an IPX4 rating, which makes the device water resistant and promises to deliver 7 hours of battery life on a single charge.
