Taiwanese chip maker MediaTek outmoded Qualcomm in global chipset shipments in 2020. The company continues to lead the market in 2021 as well. According to a Counterpoint Research report, MediaTek gained its highest ever 43% market share in the global SoC (System on Chip) smartphone chipset in the second quarter of 2021. The company had a market share of 35 % in the first quarter of 2021.
Qualcomm, on the other hand, accounted for 24% of the market share during the same period. The chipmaker has lost 4% market share since Q2 2020. Supply side constraints and performance issues have impacted Qualcomm’s overall chip shipments.
Apple remained in third place with a market share of 14%, thanks to the constant demand of the iPhone 12 series.
from China Unisoc increased its share from 4% last year to 9% in the second quarter of 2021. It gained fourth place. Samsung‘s Exynos slipped to fifth position with a 7% share as it revamps its smartphone portfolio strategy from in-sourcing as well as outsourcing to Chinese ODMs, the report said.
HiSilicon, hit by the US ban, was last on the list. The company’s market share fell from 16% in the second quarter of 2020 to just 3% in the second quarter of 2021. The accumulated inventory of Kirin SoCs is about to be depleted, according to Counterpoint Research.
Growth of 5G phones has boosted global shipping
According to the report, global shipments of AP (Application Processor) / SoC chipsets for smartphones increased 31% year-on-year in the second quarter of 2021. Growth was driven by growth in 5G smartphones. According to the report, shipments of 5G smartphones have almost quadrupled compared to the same period a year ago.
